“It's so hard [to move up] in museums, unless you have a master's or Ph.D. or, like, eight years of work experience,” she said. To get her foot in the door, Castro worked in visitor services at a mid-size museum for about two years. Sara Castro, who earned her bachelor's in history at Grinnell College in Iowa, also applied to ELAC following a frustrating experience in the art world. After earning a bachelor’s degree in art history five years ago, Erin Aguilar struggled to establish a career in the art world — or even secure an internship. Tara Young, a museum consultant, professor at the Tufts Museum Studies Program and the editor of the book “Creating Meaningful Museum Experiences for K-12 Audiences,” said museums are more purposeful in their efforts for two primary reasons.

The Bruce Goff-designed Pavilion for Japanese Art opened in 1988 at the east end of campus. In 1994, the museum acquired the May Company department store building at the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax, which is now home to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles is a contemporary, experimental, multi-disciplinary center for art and architecture and is headquartered in three architectural landmarks by the Austrian-American architect Rudolph M. Schindler. Founded in 1994, the MAK Center is a Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization and the California satellite of the MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna. The core of the programming includes the internationally recognized MAK Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program, an annual residency program for emerging international artists and architects.

Through experiments in visual narrative and emerging technologies, she is creating work that connects viewers with both the unbuilt and the built environments in more meaningful and memorable ways. Designer Ashleigh Miranda focused on juxtaposing technology and earthy elements in her moody media room. “I really wanted to showcase state-of-the-art technology but in a way that was grounded and spoke to our primitive nature.” Cutting-edge tech from Bang & Olufsen, Lutron, and JoshAI is balanced by curvaceous seating and unique art. Below, tour the inspiring rooms and outdoor spaces of the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Residents, visitors and businesses are invited to stroll, bike and roll along nearly 2 miles of streets closed to cars along Barranca Parkway and Harvard Avenue. Singh’s capstone course also coaches students, so they can get the most out of their internships.

Some 140-plus years later, the pros are still at work here, having dragged millions of fossils from the mire in the intervening years. Many of these specimens are now on display in this delightfully old-fashioned museum. Outside, the pits still bubble with black goo—you can watch paleontologists at work in the excavation of Pit 91 and toil away at the fossils waiting to be found as part of Project 23. We empower students to generate innovative business solutions for top brands. Samatha Williams’s Tearoom in the Gatehouse is brimming with vintage charm and elegant accents. Working with Jacqueline Black and Michelle Porreca, Williams brought in a Chinoiserie wall covering to give the space a garden-like atmosphere. They also installed a grass cloth ceiling treatment and sisal rug to add texture. “I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom.

“Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Now, LACMA is focusing on replacing four aging buildings on the east campus with a new home for the permanent collection, the David Geffen Galleries. Located on the Pacific Rim, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States, with a collection of nearly 152,000 objects that illuminate 6,000 years of artistic expression across the globe. Committed to showcasing a multitude of art histories, LACMA exhibits and interprets works of art from new and unexpected points of view that are informed by the region’s rich cultural heritage and diverse population. LACMA’s spirit of experimentation is reflected in its work with artists, technologists, and thought leaders as well as in its regional, national, and global partnerships to share collections and programs, create pioneering initiatives, and engage new audiences.

Now—with its decades-in-the-making master plan fully realized—the free, UCLA partner institution stages fascinating shows of contemporary art, photography and design, often with an epmhasis on local artists (most notably with its “Made in L.A.” biennial). The shows are supplemented by a small permanent collection and the Hammer’s public events calendar (arguably one of the best in the city), chock full of free lectures and screenings. See how the Hairspray and Pink Flamingos writer and director’s delightfully filthy style has redefined the possibilities of independent cinema—as well as what exactly goes into making an indie movie—during this career-spanning exhibition at the Academy Museum.

A membership drive will occur the day of the event, and those interested can purchase a plate of spaghetti and meatballs for $10 or a meatloaf plate for $12. A sandcastle-building competition will be held on the small beach beside the post, and a cornhole tournament will be held inside. “We are overjoyed to bring this type of open streets event to our Irvine community for the first time,” stated Mayor Farrah N. Khan in a news release.

A moody House of Hackney floral wall covering lines the dressing area, which leads to a powder room accented with a Kelly Wearstler’s Graffito II from Walnut Wallpaper. A black-and-white triangular mosaic tile floor by Artistic Tile from Mission Tile West puts a contemporary twist on the classic checkered pattern. Bursts of hot pink and apple green energize Steven Cordrey’s design for the home’s veranda.

And, perhaps most importantly, the program guarantees an internship — a big deal in a competitive industry. Many museums around the country have had children’s programs for years — but they are on the rise now more than ever. Deborah Sussman, whose work is included in the exhibition, talks about her early history with Charles and Ray Eames and her long career as an influential designer. The desert-spanning biennial is back, with premieres of site-specific works from a slate of to-be-announced artists. For its third iteration, Desert X will once again stage outdoor installations across about 40 miles of the Coachella Valley.

LACMA has its roots in the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science, and Art, established in 1910 in Exposition Park. In 1961, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art became a separate, art-focused institution. The Anderson Building (renamed the Art of the Americas building in 2007) opened in 1986 to house modern and contemporary art.

The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green. The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. A palette of whites, deep blues, and gold creates an elegant atmosphere in the formal living room, which was designed by Rachel Duarte. The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. Designer Rachel Scheff used the home’s spectacular ceiling, woodwork, and stained glass as the inspirations for her fanciful, flora- and fauna-filled foyer.

The Hammer Museum’s biennial showcases several artists steeped in the scrappy art form, now flourishing in the city. “The photos were not only retained on the screens where they were shown, but they actually went through the screens and invaded the space as a way of giving those two-dimensional photos a kind of three-dimensional feeling,” Perea said. “The exhibition was well received by our students and faculty because they were part of those photos. Their shadows and the movement of the installation invited people to have their senses activated.” The installation was also accompanied by an original musical score by composer Boris Salchow.

Exhibitions have ranged from an awe-inspiring showcase of Japanese tattoo traditions to a Hello Kitty retrospective. Eventually the decorative arts and paintings were moved to the Getty Center, but the villa remains as the home of Getty’s collection of Mediterranean antiquities. Today, there are roughly 1,200 artifacts on display at any one time, dated between 6,500 BC and 500 AD. Even if you’re not interested in the art, the palatial courtyards and manicured gardens are worth the visit. What’s now called the Getty Villa (a coastal mansion filled with antiquities that’s absolutely worth a visit, too) served as the decades-long home for the J. The end result is a remarkable complex of travertine and white metal-clad pavilions that houses ornate French furniture, recognizable Impressionist pieces and rotating exhibitions.

Through Gebhard’s pull and that of others, and as the museum also bloomed around it, the collection grew to include archives from the mid-century movement that gave us a recognizable Southern California architectural style which remains in the popular imagination today. At a time when many museums and colleges are grappling with financial challenges as well as their changing role in society, it may seem surprising that universities and donors are willing to shell out lots of money to make their museums showcases. Educational institutions across the United States are spending more money to renovate museums and make them a more integral part of learning.
